ALTERNATIVES THAT WORK to Hair Restoration Surgery

While hair restoration or hair transplantation is truly the only permanent solution for hair loss patients, there are a few viable FDA approved hair growth options. Whether you’re considering a hair transplant or not, you should be using one or all of the following hair medical hair restoration treatments to slow down and/or stop your hair loss.

Minoxidil, otherwise known as Rogaine has been on the market for many years.  This over the counter pharmaceutical has been proven to slow down hair loss in roughly 38% of male users. Another effective device is the FDA approved Lexington Hairmax Lasercomb.  According to the manufactures double blind placebo controlled studies roughly 61% of the men that use the device for thinning or balding hair slow their hair loss down. This Low Level Laser Light stimulates hair growth and has no known side effects.  Lastly, the most effective hair loss product on the market is still the prescription medication Propecia manufactured by Merck.  We recommend Propecia to every male suffering from hair loss. According to Merck, Propecia stops hair loss in 67% of those who use it.  We invite you to come in and visit with Tedd Dicus, our Director of Patient Education for a free hair loss consultation and more details.

WHAT'S NEW

In March 2010 Dr. Puig is hosting The Cowgirl Hair Loss Workshop, where physysicians from around the world will learn the most contemporay treatment strategies for helping ladies with hair loss. The faculty for this meeting includes among others, internationally recognized hair transplant surgery authorities: Drs Russell Knudsen from Australia, Jerzy Kolazinski from Poland, Paul Rose from Florida and Sharon Keene from Arizona.

What is the difference between male and female hair loss?

Many people think that female pattern hair loss is the same disease as male pattern hair loss, it just “looks different” in women. In the last few years there has been a lot of discussion between the hair restoration surgeons in the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) about the possibility that these are in reality two separate diseases or problems. Today many ISHRS physicians think that indeed they are two different diseases because their natural history (epidemiology) is so different. Many hair restoration surgery specialists think “Female Androgenetic Alopecia” is a misnomer and prefer the term Congenital Female Pattern Hair Loss.

Male Pattern Hair Loss Female Pattern Hair Loss
Both run in families, but can skip generations
Age on onset Usually noticed in the mid 20’s Usually noticed in 40’s around menopause, getting really noticeable in the 50’s and 60’s
Alternative Causes of Hair Loss 99% of bald men have Androgenetic Hair Loss, caused by the effect of the hormone Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on the hair follicle. Only about 50% of the women with hair loss have Congenital Female Pattern Hair Loss. Many have scaring inflammations, transient stress related hair loss, or other dermatological disease. Correct diagnosis is critically important for women with hair loss.
Extent of Loss Complete, 100%, hair loss in a area is common Complete hair loss in an area is rare, usually only 60 or 70% of the hairs lost in an area
Evolution of Baldness Bald from the outside-in the front, & inside out-in in the back, very common to lose the frontal hair line early in process. Loss starts as a wide part in the center, and spreads out over the sides of the head to the lower scalp. Rarely is the frontal hair line lost.
Miniaturization of Normal Hair Hair growth miniaturizes because of a longer resting cycle before it disappears. Hair growth miniaturizes because of a longer resting cycle before it disappears
Both Have Normal Hormone Levels Normal Testosterone & Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) Levels Normal testosterone, DHT and Estrogen hormone levels.
Reaction to Finasteride (Propecia) Males respond to Finasteride (Propecia) by slowing or stopping loss, and 48% re-grow hair. Females generally respond erratically, if at all, to Finasteride.
Either Pattern Can Occur in Either Sex Men can have classical female pattern hair loss, sometimes referred to as Diffuse Undifferentiated Patterned Alopecia (DUPA). Women can have classical male pattern hair loss, with receded temple hairlines and/or isolated crown baldness.
Both Seem to Respond to Cell Division Therapies Male Pattern Hair Loss responds to minoxidil (Rogaine) therapy and Low Level Laser Therapy, both of which seem to work by accelerating cell division Female Pattern Hair Loss responds to minoxidil (Rogaine) therapy and Low Level Laser Therapy, both of which seem to work by accelerating cell division
Both are Successfully Men can nearly always benefit from Hair Restoration Services. Women do very well, and given the correct diagnosis, will benefit from having Hair Restoration Services.
